About Sean Somers

Sean Somers is a well-known figure on the North American piping scene and is recognized as one of the top professional pipers from the Canadian Prairies. He’s an experienced bandsman, accomplished leader, award-winning composer, respected adjudicator, and prize-winning soloist.

Sean is currently a member of the Grade 2 North Stratton Pipe Band and most recently the pipe-major of the Rocky Mountain Pipe Band. Under his leadership, Rocky Mountain earned major Grade 2 titles including the North American Pipe Band Championship, the Mid-American Championship and the BC Pipers Annual Gathering. He was the pipe-sergeant of  the Grade 1 Alberta Caledonia Pipe Band, and a member of 78th Highlanders (Halifax), winning, both the North American and Canadian Championships in Grade 1. 

A passionate teacher, Sean has taught at workshops and piping schools across North America and previously served as Principal Piping Instructor at the College of Piping. 

An award-winning composer, Sean has published his own book of music called "The Out West Collection". His tunes are featured in many other contemporary collections of music and are played by pipers and bands around the world.

Sean has been formally certified through the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario as an accredited ‘A’ adjudicator in solo piping, bands and ensemble. Judging stops include British Columbia, the Canadian Prairies, the Maritimes in eastern Canada, as well as the Pacific Region, the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and Eastern Seaboard of the United States. 

Over the years he’s held multiple pipe band association leadership roles including those of President and Music Committee Chair.

Based Calgary, Alberta, in his “real life” Sean works as a civil servant, managing a team of Communications professionals with The City of Calgary.
